Color Play Mini Quilt for Moda Bake Shop

quilting with 12 weight thread

Hello Quilters!  You might remember I was on The Moda Bake Shop back in September with a Color Play Quilt ~ large orange peel style…  Well they asked designers to make a mini quilt based on their original quilt, and here’s mine… aren’t these colors so fun?

I was so lucky to score some fabric from Moda’s Basic Mixologie collection to make my mini!  Gorgeous!

This mini quilt is 22 1/2″ x 22 1/2″ ~ perfect gift size or mini swap size!

You can find all the templates and instructions to make it HERE on the Moda Bake Shop.

Mini quilt pattern by Sherri NoelI had so much fun quilting this quilt… I added some extra batting behind the center motif which makes the grey peels pop out… hard to see in pic but it looks pretty sharp.  You can see how I added it to my mini in the original MBS post.

For all the top stitching I used this Aurifil 12 weight thread.  I actually bought it to try it out for hand quilting but you can use it in your machine too!    I’ve used it in my machine before but mostly to add fun stitching to my quilt labels before I applique them on.

I think it looks Amazing! ~ I really love this look!

If you want to try it,  get yourself some 100/16 Top Stitch needles for your machine to accommodate the thicker thread.  I’m not sure what is recommended for the bobbin but I used a 5o weight that matched without any trouble.  Do a little test run on a fake quilt sandwich to get your tension mastered before going to town on your quilt.

This is a raw edge applique quilt but after I appliqued the shapes, I loved the thread so much that I went around each shape on the outside of the applique! Lookin’ pretty!

Thanks for checking this out!

  1. This is super cute! I love the colours and the shapes and raw edge applique is my favourite! This will make you happy every time to look at it! x Teje

  2. Sherri, this is SEW lovely! Love the hand-stitched look you achieved with 12 wt thread and ‘cool’ colors of Moda fabrics – quite yummy-looking! I think you must have cut some shapes of batting, to make the leaves ‘pop’. I’m curious, did you use glue or pins to hold those 2 layers of batting in place to quilt around them? Just gorgeous!!!

  3. LOVE….everything about this gorgeous lil’ quilt…except the size! I want to make one but in a much larger and lap friendly size. But back to your beautiful creation. Color turns me on, flowers and circles I adore….and I’ve been searching all over the net for any project using 12 wt. top thread and wella ~ here it is!!! I appreciate all the great photos, too. ***smiles***

  4. Ok Sherri, so I checked this out on MODA. Says “moderate” … I never follow the rules, so as a beginner, I’m tackling it … it’s a new year so what the heck? ;D Also, I figured out the the actual fabrics (per what you specifically called the charm oaks in the ingredient’s list, duh and thanks). QUESTION: I love the gray center petals … presuming with I order the charm packs there will be at least four of such to allow me to copy cat your design? Lastly, Moda Bake Shop, am I correct in my understanding that to purchase on such it’s for those who plan to spend $2,000 annually? Found the packs at another online site … but pls advise, time permitting. Thanks!

    1. Hi Janelle!
Yes there is enough to do the four center petals in gray. You can find the charm packs at many online shops by searching moda basic mixologie fabric charm pack.

  5. This Quilt is AWESOME!!!!! You did super job! Thanks for sharing… I love the colors too… Have added to my “Gotta Make List!!! giggle…
