<\/a><\/p>\n<\/a>I completed my text for Chapter 3 using the needle-turn applique technique.\u00a0 It’s one of my favorite ways to applique. I\u00a0love\u00a0the look of the turned\u00a0edges\u00a0and I also love that it’s portable and I can work on it anywhere!\u00a0 Plus it has a sort of organic look that I like.<\/p>\n<\/a><\/p>\nThread:<\/span> <\/strong>I have\u00a0a couple\u00a0favorites…<\/span><\/h4>\n
I like the following\u00a0threads because they are\u00a0light-weight and\u00a0disappear into the applique fabric.<\/span><\/h5>\n
Aurifil ~ 50 wt (the orange spools)<\/span><\/h5>\n
Superior Thread ~\u00a0Bottom Line (donut) or 50 wt Masterpiece (donut)<\/span><\/h5>\n
(I have some applique thread donuts <\/a>available in my shop<\/span>)<\/span><\/h5>\n
Needles: <\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n
You will\u00a0need an applique or straw\/milliners needle.<\/span><\/h5>\n
I\u00a0like the tulip #10\u00a0big eye applique needles for needle-turn applique. When I’m working on larger applique pieces I will sometimes use an 11 milliners\/straw needle.\u00a0The extra length helps when turning the\u00a0seam allowance to the back.<\/span><\/h5>\n
note ~ I’ve taken several hand applique classes and something I’ve learned is that the recommended needle isn’t always the best choice for me.\u00a0 I took one class from a woman\u00a0who had\u00a0tiny little hands and she recommended this needle that I could hardly hold it was so small… so use what works for you and feels like a good fit, but stay with a thin applique or straw needle.<\/span><\/h5>\n
<\/a><\/p>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<\/a><\/p>\nHere are a couple\u00a0tips on curves and points:<\/h4>\n
Concave\u00a0Curves:<\/strong><\/h4>\n
When you come to an inner\u00a0curve clip\u00a0slits into the seam allowance without cutting into the traced seam line.\u00a0 This will help your turned edge lay flat and ease the fabric under as well.<\/h5>\n
Convex Curves:<\/strong><\/h4>\n
For convex curves, clip notches out of seam allowance\u00a0to reduce bulk.<\/h5>\n
Inner Points:<\/strong><\/h4>\n
I find these to be the trickiest.\u00a0 Taper the seam allowance as you near the inner point and clip at the inner point to the seam line right before you sew it.\u00a0 Take 2-4 small stitches right in the point to hold the threads in place.\u00a0 If your thread matches your applique fabric these stitches will hardly\u00a0be noticeable.<\/h5>\n
Outer Corners:<\/strong><\/h4>\n
For outer corners sew right up to the corner, placing a stitch in the very corner, sweep fabric under with your needle and turn the corner.<\/h5>\n
