After your quilt top layout<\/a> is\u00a0pieced and you’ve added\u00a0a border<\/a>\u00a0(if you choose to) it’s time to plan out your quilt back and make your ‘Quilt Sandwich’.\u00a0\u00a0My quilt top is scrappy, and I’m determined to use up ‘stash’ (even the big pieces)\u00a0 so I decided to go with a scrappy back as well.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"quilt<\/a><\/p>\n

QUILT BACK<\/span><\/p>\n

Remember that\u00a0your backing\u00a0will always need to be\u00a0larger than the top (add 6″ to width and length.)\u00a0 If your going to make\u00a0it scrappy,\u00a0you need to plan where your seams fall.\u00a0 You don’t want them\u00a0close to the edges of the final quilt.\u00a0 The\u00a0excess backing that extends beyond the quilt top\u00a0is cut away after quilting so your seams will need to be well inside the ‘quilt top’ parameters.<\/span><\/p>\n

QUILT SANDWICH Supplies:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

quilt top<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

backing<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

batting<\/strong>\u00a0~ I’m\u00a0using warm and natural cotton batting <\/em>(love cotton!) <\/span><\/p>\n

painters tape<\/strong> ~ if your pin basting on a surface or floor<\/span><\/p>\n

quilting pins<\/strong> ~ the bent ones<\/span><\/p>\n

\"quilt<\/a><\/p>\n

Your ‘Quilt Sandwich’ consists of three parts: <\/span><\/p>\n

QUILT TOP<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

BATTING<\/strong> ~ I want my batting\u00a0to extend 2″ all the way around my quilt so I will add 4″ to the length and width of the quilt top.<\/span><\/p>\n

BACKING<\/strong><\/span> ~ I\u00a0want my backing\u00a0to be just slightly larger than my batting.\u00a0 I want it to extend 1″ beyond my\u00a0batting.\u00a0\u00a0To accomplish this I will add 2 inches to my batting length and width.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"QUILT<\/a><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Why do you need to extend the batting and backing?\u00a0 During quilting there can be some shifting of the layers.\u00a0 Extending the batting and backing will ensure this isn’t a problem, your quilt back will be large enough and you’re not quilting tiny bits lined up at the edge.\u00a0 Some quilters are more generous with their extended measurements, so do what suits you and your quilting needs.\u00a0 If you are sending your quilt to a longarmer they\u00a0may have specific requirements so\u00a0be sure to check in advance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Making a Quilt Sandwich<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

(I’m cheating and using a quilt block for my demo so it’s easier to photograph!)<\/em><\/p>\n

Lay out your batting on a large surface or the floor. Layer your quilt top\u00a0over the batting so\u00a0batting extends at least two inches around.\u00a0 Trim batting to size.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"quilt<\/a><\/p>\n

Roll up batting and quilt top together and set aside while you\u00a0lay out backing.<\/span>\u00a0\"DSC_0030<\/a>Press quilt back and smooth out on floor\/surface with right side down.\u00a0 Using painters tape (girls best friend) generously tape backing to surface.<\/span>\"quilt<\/a> Move your quilt top \/\u00a0batting ‘roll’ on top of quilt back.<\/span>\"DSC_0049<\/a> Center, unroll and smooth out batting \/ quilt top.\u00a0 This is your quilt sandwich.<\/span>\u00a0 \"quilt<\/a>Now, pin the heck out of it!\u00a0 Be sure to put a few\u00a0pins the batting area that isn’t covered by the quilt top.<\/span>\"quilt<\/a> Also be sure to fill the pins up.\u00a0 If they are not\u00a0‘full’ they\u00a0will slide and all that work will be for nothing! (boo)<\/span>\"quilt<\/a><\/p>\n

There are other methods of basting your quilt sandwich ~ if you try spray basting be sure to spray outside.<\/span><\/p>\n
