Imagine my embarrassment!\u00a0 He was right… smart puppy!<\/p>\n My tree skirt is made from four of these 12″ scrappy trip around the world quilt blocks. You can find the original scrappy quilt block tutorial from Bonnie Hunter<\/p>\n here.<\/a><\/p>\n I used this yummy In from the Cold fabric<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>by Kate Spain!<\/p>\n Let’s get started!<\/p>\n See Bonnies tutorial<\/a> for cutting and piecing for the 12″ finished block. Cut yourself strips ~ I used fat quarters so mine were a little longer at 18″ (but that’s ok)… cutting accuracy is key so make some good cuts here!<\/p>\n Sew the strips together using 1\/4″ seam… slow and steady so your strips are nice and straight… You’ll thank yourself later!<\/p>\n This magnetic seam guide\u00a0(below) helps me keep things straight when sewing long strips.\u00a0 The magnet sticks to the plate on my machine bed :) and I can position it based on my seam allowance.\u00a0 Handy!\u00a0 If you can’t find\u00a0one in your quilt shop look here<\/a> on amazon.<\/p>\n Press seams open or in opposite directions… press from front as well, to be sure there are no folds at your seams…<\/p>\n Your strip set should measure 12 1\/2″ wide if your 1\/4″ seams are accurate.<\/p>\n Cut yourself a straight edge at the end of your strip set… notice how I have the horizontal lines on my ruler lined up with the seams on my pieced set?\u00a0 This is important to get a squared up edge cut.<\/p>\n Next, cut six 2 1\/2″\u00a0units from your ‘tube’…<\/p>\n Now you should have six little tube units… Since\u00a0I wanted the red fabric\u00a0to be the center on the diagonal, I used my seam ripper to open up the seam right above the red block…<\/p>\n For each\u00a0tube, open the next seam\u00a0above… sounds easy enough, but it can get confusing so double check before you pick that seam open.\u00a0 Lay them out as you open them up to check that you’re diagonal fabrics all line up…<\/p>\n Sew strips together, nesting and pinning @ seams ~<\/p>\n Be careful to keep strips in order while sewing.\u00a0 Double check before you sew it.<\/p>\n When you finish sewing those strip units together, your first block is done!\u00a0Look over your block and be sure that all your fabrics line up on the diagonal and you didn’t turn any of your strips while sewing… For the little tree skirt (24″ x 24″) make four 12″ blocks… This is how I\u00a0quilted\u00a0my tree skirt… (read my quilt sandwich tute<\/a> here)<\/p>\n First sew your four completed blocks together, and layer:<\/p>\n 1) tree skirt backing, right side down<\/p>\n 2) batting<\/p>\n 3) top (four\u00a0block unit), right side up\u00a0 I spray basted mine together<\/p>\n and quilted on the diagonal in both directions using my walking foot.<\/p>\n Then I\u00a0trimmed off the corners, cut a slit from the center to one side (right down seam)\u00a0and added a circle cut out in the middle (I just traced a large jar for circle).<\/p>\n If you need a refresher on how to\u00a0make bias binding<\/a> \u00a0or how to attach binding<\/a>, check out my tutorials.\u00a0\u00a0On the tree skirt you can\u00a0tackle these obtuse\u00a0angled corners\u00a0the same as a 90 degree corner.\u00a0\u00a0 Stop 1\/4″ before edge, fold the binding to the right and line up with edge… That’s all there is to it!\u00a0 Fits perfect! <\/p>\n If you want to make a larger tree skirt make four larger trip around the world blocks.\u00a0 Here are the measurements, read the column down for each size.<\/p>\n (like mine)<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\n strips<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\n strips<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\n strips<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n units<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\n units<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\n units<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n IF YOU LIKE THIS YOU MIGHT ALSO LIKE MY NEW<\/p>\n![\"tree](\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rebeccamaedesigns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/tree-skirt-121-logo.jpg\"){kind=logo}
